The Outer Worlds 2 gets a release date

The Outer Worlds 2 has a release date. It was shown in a new trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, and featured something several unnamed scientists are calling “humour”.

The release date is October 29. “An adventure into capitalism by capitalism,” says the trailer above, perhaps misunderstanding the concept of irony. You play an Earth Directorate agent, who ends up on the above planet, Arcadia, “where the fate of the colony, and ultimately the entire galaxy, rests on your decisions—your strengths, your flaws, your crew, and the factions you choose to trust”.

We’ve seen quite a chunk of The Outer Worlds 2 already, including 11 thouroughly whelming minutes of first-person blastin’ and questy chattin’. Developers Obsidian almost shelved the sci-fi sequel during the Covid pandemic because they had too many projects going at once and it all got a bit much, according to the studio’s head. But years later, here we are.

The first Outer Worlds was okay, according to Alice B’s review (RPS in peace). Although it didn’t really veer too far off the well-trodden space lanes established by many other space-faring RPGs. Here’s what Alice said:

The Outer Worlds is alright, innit. It’s good fun. Sit back and let the orange and neon wash over you. Boo the cartoonishly evil corporations. Exhale through your nose at their Diet Toothpaste. I bet I’ll play it again, in fact. But you can tell it could have been great, if it had taken a few more risks. Real space cowboys take risks, don’t they?

Maybe this one will surprise us.
